SOME OLD STUFF
WILLY KILLUM (23/2)good to hear from you buddy after all these years (20?)Remember Queenstown, the virgin sacrifice to the giant of the lake and the terrible revenge the suffragettes meted out to me?
Another voice from the past, BRIAN EVANS (1/3) who regularly rang me when I had a weekly talk-back show on Radio Liberty. Thanks for your message.
KIM 26/2 You were there when at the height of the student power crisis and everyone going mad around me I hurled myself into the pond and commenced my magical verbal fireworks to cool off the hot heads (selfish baby-boomer brats)They
were the days!
NICHOLAS and SHAUNE the Kiwi (2/3) How did you both know what I am getting ready to do next? Weird stuff. Watch for developments.
HENRY COULSON (11/3)
Wow! Is this the first sign of a rising young wizard? Havelock North is exactly the sort of place a wizard might spring from. I am searching for the missing tome that will guarantee success in exams without having to study a load of unnecessary rubbish. In case I can't find it let me know the date of the exam I will organise a good luck spell instead.
The blogs posted by anonymous FEMINIST 2/3 and APPRENTICE 4/3 and 8/3 require a proper response which I will attend to asap.
My old friend Paul, the Webmaster has been looking after my guestbook since the earthquake but I am now back in business after much confusion, travelling back and forth, and being without power until a couple of days ago.
There are so many messages and expressions of support that I am inspired to start "blogging" which goes against the grain for me as much as writing letters! Here goes.
Marion (18/2) I was in the Square every fine day that week but the Christchurch CC are opposed to having a sign there giving my times. See the article (Fear and Loathing... on my site.
Thanks for being concerned.
Thanks to all those folks who sent their cheery good wishes...it really helps!

Archwizard Sir, just a short note to say thanks, thanks for making this mind of mine to think outside the box. Growing up listening to you in the Square was always something I enjoyed, some words you used that I had never heard of made me rush to school to find out what they ment. My mother sent me this link to your web page in a attempt to make me homesick, which has worked, and I will now spent the next hour or so reading and viewing. I hope this message finds you well and in good health.

Dear Wizard,
it now has been more than 21 years that I have visited a hostel in Auckland and written a word or two into its guestbook. I stumbled over an entry by you which will never get out of my head: "Travelling broadens the mind but staying home makes it deep." That alone is living proof that you are wise.
Thank you for this treasure. I'll keep it and spread the word.
Good to learn you are still alive and kicking, as I saw you back then in 1988 in Christchurch.

Dear Wizard,
When we heard you were leaving Christchurch my children and I felt so sad. We met you in our last hour in Christchurch just before flying home to Auckland after a trip round the South Island. You said it was your last day, you would be stopping for the winter and that lucky to see you. You were so lovely to talk to and the children listened intently as you climbed up onto your steps and talked about not being attached to material things. We felt so lucky to have ended our stay by meeting you and getting a wonderful photo of the kids standing with you as you cast a spell over their heads. You are an amazing man and we wish you all the best. I am sure Wizards don't retire and that you are just relocating. Christchurch will be loosing more than iconic buildings after this tragedy... x

25Feb2011 - All hail Wizard of New Zealand. When I saw the pictures of the ruined cathedral following the terrible disaster in Christchurch I was concerned for your safety as I knew there was a good chance that you may have been in the Square. I am pleased that you and Alice are safe and well. It is a great sadness that you have decided to hang up your ladder and I wish you well with your next chapter - the Oamaru Experience. On a visit to Christchurch from Scotland many years ago I had the pleasure of listening to you and was greatly impressed and entertained by your oratory and wisdom. You will be sorely missed in Christchurch and their loss will be Oamaru's gain, although I don't know if the blue penguins will be so appreciative of their new living work of art - just don't go painting them red! I can't pretend to understand a lot of your writings but I was intrigued to note that the date of your relocation announcement on 24/2/2011 adds up to 12. I hope this brings you luck and I wish you and your family well. You are a magnificent ambassador for New Zealand (and England) and I hope to see you again, on or off your ladder, at some future guest appearance in Christchurch. You have risen from the ashes before and I am confident you will do so again. I am deeply sorry for the tragedy that has befallen Christchurch and my thoughts are with you all. Best wishes.

I have always looked forward to seeing you, Wizard, every year when I travel through Christchurch to get to Antarctica. Usually you are there when I come back through though, in the summer month of February. I make a point of going to the square just to hear you talk. I was there last week, Monday, the day before the big quake. I had just got in Sunday night and the first thing I did the next day was go and listen to you talk. I was really happy to see you there and you made me laugh heartily at what you were saying. You may remember seeing me, I was the woman with short hair and sunglasses, sitting to your right. I had to move out of the sun and moved into some shade. You bring so much happiness to me that every time I am in Christchurch, I have to come hear you speak. I was coming to hear you speak that Tuesday, just got done shopping for presents for my husband, good whiskey and beautiful N.Z. made rugby shirt. Then of course I did not make it and now my heart is broken as well. I hope you will stay a part of Christchurch, but do what you must to stay safe. If I go back to Antarctica, I will look for you again in February. Be well.

Dear Wizard,
Reading your piece titled "Love, Marriage and the Consumer Society" left me feeling fairly confused. Your argued form of 'marriage' is in your own words, a "radical new form of love and marriage". I would beg to differ however. Firstly, you symbolically title your 'young women' as slaves, and yourself as the master. This, I think we can easily agree is not a revolutionary new form of looking at love and relationships, but rather the patriarchal form that has been in place for centuries. Men as masters owning women. Surely accepting such a traditional view of marriage would go against your revolutionary sensibilities? Considering yourself the owner of another being does not move yourself, or indeed anyone past the patriarchal form of consumer-based society that we have in place today.
Furthermore, it is surely typical that the revolutionary form of marriage should indeed be polygamy. It seems fairly typical to me that your preferred form would be a situation in which you, the self-proclaimed 'master' would have multiple women rather than polyandry, which surely would be far more unique and revolutionary, though perhaps not as preferable to a man such as yourself. It would surely be significantly more difficult to have these unsuspecting women supporting you financially, if you were in a relationship with one woman, who was also married to several other men?
Furthermore, could you please explain what exactly is new, revolutionary or different about insisting on the financial support of your so-called slaves? Surely finding a means to support yourself and live as an independent wizard would do far more for your cause, than appearing as a mere man who enjoys the company of young women while leeching off them financially at the same time? The idea that you quit working to avoid being psychologically or socially controlled by people with different value systems as surely many have been able to find means of financial independent through a variety of creative ways, without spending their time living off other peoples wages.
Finally, your point regarding Separate residence or residences for the wives would be highly desirable. Again, there is nothing unique or new here. Consider forms of Islam where men have multiple wives and are required to provide separate accommodation for each. Or alternatively consider for example, Mormon fundamentalists who still practice polygamy and have a separate bedroom for each wife. There is nothing different, or ground breaking in your arguments. Indeed, it is made up of the very essence of traditional patriarchal male desires.
I look forward to hearing your response in regards to my argument.
Best regards, a feminist.

Greetings great Wizard.
The science fiction writer Arthur C Clarke suggested that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. My mother, born 1918, regards TV remote controls as similar to magic wands. Science, engineering and magic can be seen as interchangeable.
Occult means hidden. Industrial chemistry, industrial electronics, medicine and automation engineering are all occult from the point of view of ordinary people.
Scientists and engineers are wizards of the forces of nature, just as captains of industry are wizards of business. In the near future, we will see advanced nations supported by the forces of nature more than by toiling workers.

In response to a feminist, March 2011
The science fiction writer Arthur C Clarke suggested that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. An advanced (wizarding) society takes full advantage of the forces of Nature.
An advanced society could easily be polygamous, with harems of meek, contented little women, but a woman can sustain ecstasy longer and more often than a man can. An advanced society could be polyandrous. A spirited wife enjoys her harem of wizards, who enjoy her and take pride in keeping their little woman in sustained ecstasy.
Wizards, by definition, exploit the forces of Nature, and are so successful that they do not need to exploit women financially. Whether polygamous or polyandrous, wizards take pride in their happy and carefree little women.

To Feminist 2/3/11
On Love and Marriage. Thank you for taking the trouble to read my article and respond to it. You seem to have missed the main thrust of my arguing for more tolerance in legally allowing different types of marriage. I am not recommending "once size fits all". The form I propose does depend on the success of the feminist movement in giving women legal and financial independence from men. However making a religion out of legally enforced gender equality makes it impossible for men to love and be responsible for their marriage partners. If children were given legally enforced equality with adults (and this has been happening)then parents cannot love and be responsible for their children.I am concerned with love and responsibility not political power. I am also opposed myself to the principle of patriarchy, in which men want children to carry their name and wives are regarded in many ways as "property". How can you possibly read my article and claim that I hold this view? Another radically new proposal, in my attempt to improve the connection between romantic love and marriage, is to allow wives to leave their husbands (provided no children are involved) but not allow husbands to leave their wives. After all this is the way the parental love structure operates, mothers who desert their children are as despised as men who desert their wives. Most children leave their mother's home when they are mature and some leave because they simply don't get on. This not seen as reprehensible.
You are onbiously horrified that I use the term master/slave role structure for the romantic love relationship. Don't forget, the woman can be the master and the man the slave. These are roles. I believe that in MOST nuclear family marriages the man is far more frightened of upsetting his wife than vice versa! In satisfying relationships (including gay ones)there is a certain amount of dominance and submission depending on the personal background of the participants. We are not machines but sensual beings with basically animal natures. Falling in love and standing in love are very different but they fit together. The master/slave role is the essence of the mother/child role complex and many others.
What are your thoughts on this? Please reply.

Hullo Auld Friend! I hope you've been keeping yourself warm during these frightfully cold days. Is the Mrs. still cooking up a proper boil for ye? That's some fine grub and I'm missin' it meself, friend. No onto the reason for my call. I hear through the Rata vine that you're considering doffing the auld wizard's garb for the last time. As much as we'll certainly miss your ever-present, heart-rending performances, all performed with a proper wizard's twinkle in your eye...I can understand this monumental decision which must certainly have been a difficult one, was necessary. Perhaps the Queen will see fit to retire you in style, with a pension, for all your work in Canterbury. Perhaps I'll stop by when I visit Frodo down in St. Albans and have some of your wife's wonderfully delicious Maori bread. My mouth is watering at the mere thought of such a thing.

I read in the Press about the Wizard's 'Save Our Soul' campaign, where he argues for Christchurch to be rebuilt using Gothic-revival architecture.
I cannot agree more! This would be wonderful, and of course the Wizard is right that this could be done in any material.
I saw the idea was immediately laughingly dismissed by Sir Miles Warren, whose vision would be to replace the destroyed buildings by the "best architecture of today". Oh for goodness sake. Modern architecture has been at an absolute low point for the past half-century, with their unadorned stark box-sets with holes-in-the-wall for windows that keep winning prizes. Please keep Warren and the brotherhood away from making the decisions for us and let's build an inspiring and interesting, people-friendly and beautiful town. I am certain that most Christchurch people would prefer the Wizard's vision over Sir Miles Warren's one if they would be asked.
Why isn't there a Save Our Soul website yet, let's start a referendum that CERA will listen to!

G'day,
Now, I'm not entirely sure if I am enquiring in the right place, but the standards of Her Majesty's Swan River Colony has fallen into a disgrace and needs the Imperial Army keep order.
I was thinking, after reading the various news articals and the website of the Waikato Dragoons, that the Swan River Colony could do with a good deal of Pacifist Warfare.
That being said, I think I must point out that I am only in my second last year of highschool, and not a member of A.I.A. in the first place, so I have no idea of how to form our own Milita to defend the borders of Her Majesty's Empire. So I seek the advice of the High ArchWizard, Master Of Majyk of the Lands Across the Tasman Pond in how to form said Milita.
Also, does the ArchWizard know any former Imperial Army chaps living over here that I could get touch with to assist in my campaign.
Regards,
- Colonist

Just been to the sos site, you have my support over the rebuild of ChCh, my ancestors were among the first white settlers here and dairy entries show what they thought of having their farms pushed out so the city could be built but, agreed that the city should be built, so ChCh has always been a place controversy, my ancestors did love what had been created on what had been their farm. Lets keep the Gothic look, its what people came for and kept coming over the years.

Thanks for all your posts. I've been a bit preoccupied what with the disruptions caused by the Earthquake. We are very lucky, our house came through more or less intact even though we live in Avonside and are surrounded by liquifaction and munted dwellings.
The biggest problem for me is the present state of Cathedral Square which has been the stage for my living theatre performances since 1974. The longest running show in Australasia, though I do go into recess in the winter.
I see that some of you hjave come across my separate website on the danger opf a quick, cheap, and nasty "modernist" rebuild of the wrecked city of Christchurch.
You can find it at "www.wizardsos. co.nz". Nothing will happen though unless people start posting on it and linking it to the social media.
I am always prepared to speak publicly on the topic but I am lousy at Facebook and Twitter stuff.
I'll be back in a day or two to reply to some specific comments and queries.

Just a hello from an expat solo mother living in brisbane australia now. Glad to hear you made it through the quake okay, but disappointed you let a thing like mother nature end your magical influence over the hearts and minds of the people of christchurch. if i was still in the city, and going through all the chaos over there, i would cherish some time out from the problems, to listen to you talk, no matter where i had to go. People need respite from the turmoil, and you gave them that, even if it was in their lunch hour during a hectic day. Yes the square has gone, but the people still remain. It wasnt the buildings and the concrete that loved you, it was the people!
Hope all is well with you.

Having said all of that, I wonder if Ande's idea isn't the best (regardless of what format you choose to go with for the blog). If it was still public with no comments, but you cross-posted entries in a private forum, you could allow people to respond and discuss in a controlled/private environment, but still keep the blog itself public. I'm not sure how much extra work that would be for you, but if it was negligible I would say that's the best option for running your site the way you have and seem to love, but keeping the riffraff at bay.

Dear Mr. Wizard--
Seeing you was a highlight of our trip to NZ, but all the more poignant as it was a week before the earthquake. It seemed we had seen the last of that wonderful cathedral, and the last of the Wizard.
As a San Francisco Bay resident, I would like to offer my humble submission that Christchurch will never be like San Francisco--except alas for the quakes--but it may certainly be ever more uniquely Christchurch: not SF, but in several ways, a finer, more beautiful place, and a place with a Gothic Cathedral. In a future visit, I hope to see that cathedral again, but a new and stronger reincarnation, built to modern structural standards, and at its feet, the same old Wizard, with the same faults and faculties.
Cheers from a stranger, and a toast of the Marlborough White to you, sir, and to the future.

I am really interested in your theories and ideas and was wondering if you are still offering your services to Christchurch - if so where and when could one come and listen?
Also do you want an apprentice? :0)
Kind wishes, Adrian.
